has long been singer-songwriter Amber Hargett’s salutation to fans (affectionately addressed as “heartbeats”). It’s a refrain from a song on Hargett’s sunny debut, Paper Trail, which garnered an instant following and rave reviews among the southern Ohio music scene and beyond in 2019.

The phrase earns new context with the release of Coal Mine Canary which, as the title suggests, is a much more foreboding and nuanced affair, exploring life’s complexities and occasionally dark, challenging places. The mantra now serves as a needed reminder for for the listener, who will inevitably relate to the visceral subject matter, and perhaps share both tears and joy.

Although weightier in lyrical content, the record builds on Hargett’s strong sense of melody, penchant for storytelling, and incredible vocal abilities. It’s still a very approachable, folk song oriented, and pop-sensible listen. Fans and newcomers will appreciate the gorgeous instrumentation and keen production delivered by long-time collaborator, Patrick Himes, at Reel Love Recording Co. and a venerable Who’s Who of Dayton, OH area musicians.

Ultimately, Coal Mine Canary, proves to be a worthy sophomore release, demonstrating an artist dedicated to the ever-growing dimension of her craft and ability to connect with listeners.
